What Is E-Learning?
E-learning is any learning delivered electronically. That definition is so broad it is almost useless on its own — so what follows is the types you will actually encounter, and which of them work.
The definition
E-learning covers learning delivered through electronic technology — historically including offline formats, and in practice today almost always over the internet. The term is broader than online learning, which usually implies a course with an instructor and a cohort.

What separates e-learning that works
The format matters far less than whether the design makes you do anything. Three markers, in order of how much they predict:
1. Does it make you retrieve?
Watching a video is recognition. Answering a question without the material in front of you is retrieval, and retrieval is what builds durable memory. A course that is ninety percent video with a quiz bolted on the end is a documentary with an assessment attached.
2. Is it spaced, or crammed into one sitting?
Content revisited across days beats the same content consumed in a single session. Most self-paced platforms are built for completion in one sitting because completion rates look better that way — which optimises for the metric rather than for you.
3. What happens when you are stuck?
This is where self-paced e-learning is structurally weakest, and it is the point at which most people quietly abandon a course. Before enrolling in anything substantial, find out whether there is a route to a human.
Look at the course outline and count how much of it is you doing something versus you receiving something. If the balance is heavily toward receiving, expect to remember correspondingly little — regardless of how good the production is.
Microlearning, briefly
Short units are genuinely useful, but for a narrower job than they are sold for. Because they are naturally spaced and naturally repeated, they suit reinforcement well. They suit building understanding of something complex badly — a difficult concept needs a stretch of uninterrupted attention, and five-minute units cannot supply it.
