Which learning approach are you using?

Twelve statements about how you study right now. You'll get a breakdown across all three approaches researchers identify — deep, surface, and strategic — plus what's likely driving your current pattern.

The quiz itself needs no signup — your answers stay in your browser and are never stored. The optional guide further down does ask for an email.

How this quiz works

The three approaches come from decades of research on how students actually go about studying — beginning with Marton and Säljö in 1976 and developed by John Biggs, Noel Entwistle and Paul Ramsden. The statements here are loosely modelled on that literature's structure, particularly Biggs' Study Process Questionnaire.

Two things worth knowing before you read your result. First, this isn't a validated psychological instrument — it's a reflection tool, not an assessment. Second, and more usefully: your approach is not a personality type. It shifts with your subject, your workload, and your stress level. A result you don't like is describing your current conditions, not your ceiling.
